The No Makeup, Makeup Look

We love the transformative nature of makeup, and its ability to make women look and feel great about themselves. But sometimes less is more. Even when it’s not. The no makeup-makeup look may look like no makeup is involved, but it really requires a bit makeup and some effort to get that effortless look.  But no matter what skin tone or skin type – this look is great for everyone! The best part is, you don’t need a makeup artist or a beauty guru to achieve this look! With a few tools and some pro techniques, you can enhance your natural features to look naturally fresh faced. We’ve broken it down into 4 easy steps: skincare, brow styling, eye definition, and yes, makeup, to make it easy to get that “I woke up looking like this” look.

Let's get started!

1. Skincare

First things first, you need a strong base. Having a good skincare regimen will work wonders on the outcome of this look. A strong routine will keep your skin healthy and glowing.  Our Complexion Perfection Dermaplaners are great for prepping the skin. They exfoliate to help stimulate the production of collagen and increase your skin’s ability to absorb skincare products. It also removes facial hair and dead skin, leaving you with improved skin texture for smoother makeup application. Gently sweep the blade across the surface of your skin and apply your serums or moisturizer after. Next, say good-by to puffy skin and eyebags. The Complexion Perfection Ice Roller massages and cools the skin to reduce puffiness and increase blood circulation, which gives a brightened appearance. Just chill in the freezer for about 20 minutes, then gently roll around the eyes to soothe and reduce puffiness and over the entire face to calm and brighten.

2. Brow Styling

To stay true to the natural look, a little brow grooming is all you need. Embrace your natural brows – bushy or thin works great with this look. What’s important is that they are groomed vs unruly. Start by using the Brow and Lash Shaper to comb through your eyebrow hair and trim any hair that is excessively long. The spoolie is a great feature that combs every brow hair to easily see where trimming is needed.  If you have thin brows, you may not need trimming. You might also want to skip the plucking. Just remove any hairs in the center of your brows or a few low under the arch to shape. For those with bushy brows, you will definitely need to trim and pluck – but be careful not to overpluck – your mantra should be less is more. Step back between every pluck to see the effect.  Your goal is to create separation between brows and to lightly shape and define the arch. The Luxe Slant Tweezer has hand sharpened tips that precisely grip hair for easy brow grooming. Finally, follow up with a gel or wax to hold the brows in place, or give your arches a little more definition with a tinted brow gel. Finish by brushing your brows outward in their natural shape with the brush from the Brow and Lash Shaper.

3. Eye Definition

Even with a no makeup-makeup look, you still want your eyes to look fresh and awake! Mascara is the magic to achieving this look, and with some assistance from our beauty tools you can create an even more eye-opening effect. Start by curling your lashes. Our Pro Performance Eyelash Curler has a soft arch and ergonomic handle to reach a variety of eye shapes. Gently move the curler close to the lash line and squeeze for 5 seconds. Then move the middle of the lashes and squeeze again.  Next put on your favorite mascara and run the Velvet Touch Eyelash Separator through them to remove clumps.

4. Makeup

It’s the rare individual that has absolutely flawless skin. Most of us need a little help to hide pores, dark under-eye circles or blemishes. But with a great concealer, hydrating foundation and quality makeup tools, just about anyone can look fresh and glowing. For a dewy finish, apply hydrating foundation with a beauty sponge from the Beauty Sponge Set. The rounded edges make application effortless. Wet the sponge until it expands, squeeze out excess water, then add a bit of foundation to the sponge. Use dabbing and rolling motions to blend into your skin. Next apply concealer with the mini sponge where you want a little extra coverage, like under your eyes, around your nose or over blemishes. Always apply concealer over foundation to get the most impact. For a that rosy, glowing effect, apply a very light layer of soft blush in the same undertone of your skin. The fluff concealer is a great multi-tasking brush that we love to use when applying blush for this look. The fluffy domed tip allows for the perfect diffusion of color.

1) Create a fiery eye with the Velvet Touch Eye Essentials Brush Set. Choose bronzy warm tones in reds and oranges. Start with a neutral warm base color and apply to the eyelid using the Crease Blending Brush. Apply a red, bronzy shade to the outer eye and crease with the Pointed Crease Blending Brush. Then apply a warm orange shade to the lid and add shimmer. Blend using the Smudger Brush to soften. Using the Eyeliner brush, apply a black, crisp line to the upper lid and extend beyond the lid toward the outer brow for bold impact.

2) Create a dewy base. After primer, apply a luminous foundation that will help create a lit from within look. Using the High Density Foundation Brush and the Radiance Beauty Sponge apply in a stippling motion to buff foundation onto the face to create an airbrushed finish.

3) Add Dimension. Using a clean Radiant Beauty Sponge, gently dab yellow and red powder to cheekbones and blend into skin. For added glow use the Fan Brush and a powder highlighter and apply sparingly.

4) Frame the eyes. Thick brows are the trend. Let your brows grow and brush them up to create a feathered effect. Fill in gaps with a matching brow color using a stiff eye brush like the eyeliner brush in the Radiant Brush Set.

Recreate this look at home with the Radiance Brush Set and the Velvet Touch Eye Brush Set by Japonesque, following these steps:

Get the look!

1) Create a matte base.  After primer, apply a matte textured foundation in your exact shade and apply sparingly using the Beauty Sponge from the Radiance Brush Set. Apply concealer around eyes and over blemishes.  Set the complexion with a light dusting of setting powder applied with the luxuriously fluffy fibers of the Radiance Powder Brush.

Winter-Radiant-Makeup-Looks-1-1

2) Add cool tones to eyes.  For this stunning icy look the Velvet Touch Eye Brush Set is all you need.  Wet the angled eyeliner brush and line the water line of lower lashes with a dark blue eyeshadow.  Apply white shadow to the entire eye lid and brow bone using a Crease Blending Brush.  Then apply the dark blue shadow to the upper lid to create a thick cat eye.  To create a more dramatic effect, add lashes and line the brow bone in a lighter blue tone for an unexpected pop of cool color – add gems along the browbone line.

Winter-Radiant-Makeup-Looks-2-1

3) Add a touch of blush – create a winter flush on cheeks with a subtle touch of blush. The Japonesque Blush brush is ideal for a gentle diffusion of powder on cheeks.  For fair skin choose cooler pastel shades, darker skin tones should choose warm blue-based shades.

Winter-Radiant-Makeup-Looks-3-1

4) Feathered eyebrows are the trendiest thing right now. Get this look by letting your brows grow and brushing them up. Fill in the gaps with a matching brow color. The angled eyeliner brush in the Radiant Brush Set can also expertly shade in brows.

5) For even more impact, apply a cool blue color to lips.
